Concrete Cost per Yard: Prices, Delivery, and Minimums

Compare dated concrete price benchmarks, then calculate delivered cost from local yard prices, minimum billing, delivery fees, and waste counted once.

Concrete cost per yard depends on the mix, market, order size, and what the quote includes. Concrete Network's July 14, 2026 price guide reports a nationwide range of $160 to $195 or more per cubic yard, with delivery and labor considered separately. That is a published benchmark, not a supplier quote for your address. Other guides use different dates and delivery assumptions; compare those details before comparing their numbers.

For a worked example, a 1.5 yd3 patio is $247.50 in material at an illustrative $165/yd3. A 3 yd minimum plus $125 delivery makes the same order $620 delivered, or $413.33 per usable yd3. The minimum and delivery fee are example inputs, not universal supplier policies.

The number to compare is the delivered total, not only the headline price per yard. In the cost calculator, apply waste only once. If your known volume already includes waste, set Waste Factor to 0%. If you enter measured dimensions or net volume, add the appropriate allowance there. The price input remains dollars per cubic yard, even when the volume is entered in cubic meters.

If a supplier will not write the delivered total, the quote is not ready for a clean comparison. Ask for billable yards, delivery, fuel, tax, short-load, included wait time, and the surcharge after that window.

These examples use an illustrative $165/yd3 and a $125 delivery fee. Slab rows assume 4 inches of thickness and 10% waste. The 3 yd3 row is an order quantity that already includes any allowance. Yards are displayed to two decimals, but prices use unrounded volume, matching the interactive calculator. No minimum billing is applied unless stated; replace these inputs with your quote.

The delivered total can be higher if the supplier adds a delivery fee, minimum-load fee, short-load fee, fuel surcharge, or waiting-time charge. The three unit prices are sensitivity examples, not a claimed market range.

If your order is small, ask whether the supplier has a minimum load or short-load fee. A low price per yard can still produce a higher invoice when the order is below the local delivery minimum.

Headline price vs delivered total

The price per yard is only the first line of a ready-mix quote. The delivered total can change quickly when a supplier adds fixed charges or bills a minimum load.

This is why the concrete price calculator asks for minimum billable yards and fixed fees. A supplier with a higher price per yard can still be cheaper if the delivered total is clearer or the minimum-load policy is better for your project size.

Dated price benchmarks and their limits

Concrete prices move by region, fuel cost, cement availability, mix design, and delivery distance. Treat any national average as a starting assumption, then replace it with a local quote before ordering.

Both pages were checked on September 10, 2026. Their figures differ in date, method, and delivery scope; do not average them into a new national price. Concrete Network also cites a $179.95 national average for 2025, not a live 2026 supplier quote. This guide does not independently reproduce that survey.

Do not compare only the middle number. A 2 yd3 order at $150/yd3 with a $250 fee can cost more than a 2 yd3 order at $175/yd3 with a smaller delivered charge. The delivered total matters more than the headline price per yard.

Price per yard by project type

Different projects can use different concrete assumptions. The yard price may look similar, but the delivered total changes because the order size, access, mix strength, and finishing requirements are different.

If you only know square footage and thickness, use the concrete cost estimator after converting the project to cubic yards. If you already know the delivered yard price, enter it directly and compare bags only when the job is small enough to mix safely.

Quick estimate workflow

Use cost per yard as the base number, then turn it into a delivered estimate. The reliable workflow is:

  1. Calculate concrete volume from the actual project dimensions.
  2. Add a waste factor once, unless the quantity already includes it.
  3. Ask the supplier for price per cubic yard and delivered total.
  4. Apply any minimum billable yards, short-load fee, fuel fee, and tax.
  5. Compare the delivered total with bag count, handling weight, and placement time.

If you only know square footage, convert thickness into feet first:

cubic yards = square feet x thickness in / 12 / 27

Then add waste:

cubic yards after waste = base cubic yards x 1.05 to 1.10

Before you compare supplier quotes, make the calculator inputs match how a ready-mix order is actually priced. Most quote mistakes come from using a clean project volume while the supplier is billing a rounded, minimum, or fee-adjusted delivered order.

For example, enter 3 yd3 already allowed for waste at $165/yd3, $125 delivery, no minimum and 0% additional waste: the result is $620.00. Leaving 10% waste on would price 3.3 yd3 and show $669.50 instead. The latter is correct only if the starting 3 yd3 is net volume that still needs the allowance.

The calculator has separate delivery/short-load and access fields, but no tax rate or per-minute waiting-time field. Add known dollar charges to the relevant fee allowance once, or compare them separately against the supplier's invoice. If your yard price already includes delivery, do not add that delivery charge again.

When a supplier gives only a price per yard, ask for the same quote with all fixed charges included. Then enter the delivered total assumptions into the calculator so you can compare ready-mix, bagged concrete, and contractor bids on the same basis.

Concrete cost per yard formula

For ready-mix concrete:

ready-mix total = cubic yards after waste x price per yard + delivery fees

For a material-only planning number:

base material cost = cubic yards after waste x price per yard

Apply waste once before pricing. If the measured net project needs 3.4 cubic yards and you use 10% waste, price 3.74 cubic yards. If 3.74 is already your order quantity, do not multiply it by 1.10 again.

If the supplier charges a minimum delivered amount, compare both numbers:

That minimum matters most for patios, shed pads, sidewalks, and small slabs that need less than a full truckload.

What affects price per cubic yard?

Supplier quotes vary by location and mix design. When asking for a price, make sure you know what is included.

If two quotes use different assumptions, normalize them before choosing. Compare the same cubic yards after waste, same mix requirement, same delivery window, same access method, and same tax or surcharge treatment.

A concrete quote can be reasonable and still incomplete. Slow down when the number hides the assumptions that change the invoice.

Use the lowest quote only after the scope is clear. The better quote is the one that names the delivered total, mix design, order quantity, minimums, fees, access assumptions, and timing policy.

Mix strength and add-on price pressure

The price per yard usually rises when the project needs a stronger or more specialized mix. A light patio, a driveway, a garage slab, and a structural footing may not use the same specification.

This calculator is for buying and planning. It is not structural engineering. Use the mix required by the plans, local code, inspector, or qualified professional when the project has structural or permit requirements.

Example: 3 cubic yards of ready-mix

Assume:

  • Project volume after waste: 3.0 yd3
  • Ready-mix price: $165 per yd3
  • Delivery or short-load fee: $125

Calculation:

3.0 x $165 = $495
$495 + $125 = $620

Planning estimate: $620 for ready-mix material and delivery fees before labor, prep, reinforcement, finishing, taxes, or other job costs.

If the same job would require hundreds of bags, the lower material price is only part of the decision. Handling time, mixing speed, and finish quality can matter as much as the invoice line.

Example: slab with waste factor

Assume a 16 ft by 12 ft slab at 4 in thick:

16 x 12 x 4 / 12 / 27 = 2.370370... yd3

Add 10% waste:

(16 x 12 x 4 / 12 / 27) x 1.10 = 2.607407... yd3

At $165 per yd3 plus a $125 delivery fee:

(16 x 12 x 4 / 12 / 27) x 1.10 x $165 = $430.222222...
material plus $125 delivery = $555.22, rounded to cents

This is still a material-only estimate. A real quote may also include base prep, forms, reinforcement, finishing, cleanup, and site access work.

When cost per yard is not enough

Price per yard is useful, but it can hide the real decision. Before ordering, check these questions:

  • Is the delivered total based on actual yards or a minimum billable load?
  • Does the quoted price include delivery, fuel, environmental fees, and tax?
  • Will the truck be able to reach the pour area safely?
  • Do you need a pump, buggy, chute extension, or extra helpers?
  • Is the pour large enough that bagged concrete would create cold-joint risk?
  • Does the project need reinforcement, control joints, permits, or inspection?

Keep the supplier quote separate from the full installed project cost. A contractor bid may include excavation, forming, reinforcement, finishing, cleanup, and overhead that are not part of a concrete-only quote.

Contractor bid sanity check

When a contractor quotes the whole job, the concrete cost per yard is only one piece of the bid. Use your material estimate to check whether the concrete line is plausible, then evaluate the rest of the scope separately.

If the bid is much higher than the material estimate, that is not automatically wrong. The gap may be labor, access, demolition, prep, finish quality, insurance, overhead, or warranty. The problem is only when the scope is unclear.

Price per yard vs total project cost

Concrete price per yard is only one line item. The final project cost may also include:

  • Excavation, grading, gravel base, and compaction
  • Forms, stakes, vapor barrier, wire mesh, rebar, or fiber reinforcement
  • Pump rental, buggy service, wheelbarrow labor, or extra helpers
  • Finishing, control joints, curing compound, and cleanup
  • Demolition, hauling, permits, inspections, or contractor overhead

Calculator results are useful for planning, but they are not a substitute for a supplier quote or contractor bid.

How to ask suppliers for a usable quote

When calling a ready-mix supplier, have these details ready:

  • Cubic yards needed after waste
  • Mix strength or project type
  • Delivery address and truck access notes
  • Preferred pour date and time window
  • Whether you need a pump, buggy, or chute placement help
  • Any minimum load, short-load, fuel, waiting-time, or weekend fees

Ask whether the quote is per yard only or a delivered total. That one question prevents many early estimates from looking cheaper than the final invoice.

Supplier quote questions before ordering

Use this script when you are close to scheduling the truck:

  1. "For this address and order size, what is the delivered total?"
  2. "What PSI, slump, air entrainment, fiber, or additives are included?"
  3. "What is the minimum billable load, and how do you handle short loads?"
  4. "How much unloading or waiting time is included?"
  5. "How far can the chute reach, and when would I need a pump or buggy?"
  6. "Are tax, fuel, environmental fees, weekend fees, and cancellation terms included?"
  7. "Can you send the quote in writing with cubic yards, fees, and delivery window?"

That list turns a rough phone price into something you can compare. It also helps catch cases where a contractor's material allowance is based on different yardage, different mix strength, or missing delivery fees.

When to get more than one quote

Get at least two local quotes when the project is large, the pour window is tight, the site has access problems, or the first quote includes a high short-load fee. Also compare suppliers when you need a special mix, fiber, air-entrained concrete, weekend delivery, or a pump referral.

For small DIY work, one supplier quote plus a bagged concrete comparison may be enough. For driveways, garage slabs, footings, and commercial work, a second quote can reveal whether the expensive line item is concrete, delivery, access, or labor.

Bagged concrete vs cost per yard

Bagged concrete is usually priced by the bag, but it still converts back to cubic yards. Common planning yields are about 0.30 ft3 for a 40 lb bag, 0.45 ft3 for a 60 lb bag, and 0.60 ft3 for an 80 lb bag.

Because one cubic yard is 27 ft3, a cubic yard takes about:

That is why cost per yard and bag count should be compared together. A few bags are simple. Dozens or hundreds of bags can change the labor, timing, and finish risk even when the material price looks close.

Normalize supplier quotes before choosing

Two ready-mix quotes can look different because they include different line items. Normalize them before deciding which supplier is cheaper.

The best quote is not always the lowest price per yard. It is the quote with the clearest delivered total for the same yardage, mix, delivery window, and access plan.

What is a short-load fee?

A short-load fee is an extra charge for a small ready-mix order that is below the supplier's preferred or minimum delivery quantity. Ask for the delivered total because the fee can matter more than the per-yard price on small jobs.

Is concrete cheaper by the yard or by the bag?
