This keeps the fence material takeoff separate from the concrete estimate. A fence quote may include panels, rails, caps, fasteners, gates, staining, digging, old-post removal, and cleanup; this page only sizes the concrete.

For a round fence post hole:

cubic feet per hole =

Then multiply by post count and add waste:

total concrete = cubic feet per hole x number of posts
concrete to buy = total concrete x (1 + waste percentage)
bags = round up(concrete to buy / bag yield)

A common 4x4 line-post planning example is a 10 in diameter hole with 30 in of concrete fill. That is about 1.36 ft3 before waste, or about 1.50 ft3 with 10% waste. Using common bag yields, that rounds to about 3 80 lb bags, 4 60 lb bags, or 5 40 lb bags per post.

For a 12 in diameter by 36 in concrete-filled hole, plan about 2.59 ft3 with 10% waste. That rounds to about 5 80 lb bags, 6 60 lb bags, or 9 40 lb bags per post.

Common planning yields are 0.60 ft3 for an 80 lb bag, 0.45 ft3 for a 60 lb bag, and 0.30 ft3 for a 40 lb bag. Always check the yield printed on the product you plan to buy.

4x4 fence post concrete estimate

A 4x4 post does not automatically tell you the concrete volume. The hole diameter and concrete-filled depth decide the bag count.

For a simple planning example, assume:

  • Waste factor: 10%

Gate, end, and corner posts should be estimated separately if they use larger holes. Do not average them into the line-post count.

6x6 fence post concrete estimate

Many 6x6 posts use larger holes than light fence line posts. The same cylinder formula applies, but the diameter and depth assumptions are usually different.

Assume 10 regular line posts, each with a 10 in diameter hole and 30 in of concrete fill.

Per post with 10% waste:

1.36 ft3 x 1.10 = 1.50 ft3

For 10 posts:

1.50 x 10 = 15.0 ft3

The math says bags are possible, but the weight, mixing pace, bracing, and transport plan should be checked before buying.

Example: fence line with gate and corner posts

Assume a fence needs:

  • 14 regular line-post holes at 10 in diameter and 30 in concrete fill.
  • 4 corner or gate-post holes at 12 in diameter and 36 in concrete fill.
  • 10% waste.

Regular posts:

10 in x 30 in = 1.36 ft3
1.36 x 14 = 19.04 ft3

Larger posts:

Should you subtract the post volume?

For a tight estimate, concrete volume is the hole volume minus the part of the post inside the concrete. In field planning, many homeowners and contractors skip that deduction because dug holes are rarely perfect cylinders.

If you subtract displacement, still add waste and round up to whole bags. Running short during a post-setting job is usually more expensive than having a few unopened bags to return.

Gravel depth and concrete-filled depth

If a gravel layer goes under the post, do not count that layer as concrete. Use the concrete-filled depth in the formula.

Example:

total hole depth = 36 in
gravel depth = 6 in
concrete-filled depth = 30 in

That difference changes the bag count. A 10 in diameter hole with 36 in of concrete fill needs about 1.80 ft3 with 10% waste, while the same hole with only 30 in of concrete fill needs about 1.50 ft3 with 10% waste.

Fast-setting concrete is common for fence posts, but bag count is not the only decision.
