Calculate the hole as a cylinder using the diameter and the depth that will contain concrete after gravel. Subtract the sleeve or pipe cylinder if it occupies that same zone, multiply by the number of identical poles, add one waste allowance, and divide by the actual bag yield.

How much concrete does a 12 inch by 36 inch flagpole hole need?

A 12 inch diameter by 36 inch deep hole contains about 2.36 cubic feet when the full depth is concrete. If 4 inches is gravel and a 4 inch sleeve occupies 30 inches, the example leaves about 2.06 cubic feet after 10% waste, or 4 bags at a 0.60 cubic-foot yield.

Should I subtract the flagpole sleeve from the hole volume?

Yes, when the sleeve or pipe occupies space that would otherwise be filled with concrete. Use its outside diameter and the portion inside the concrete-filled depth. Do not subtract it if it is outside the pour or if the installation detail calls for a different fill method.

Does gravel reduce the flagpole concrete amount?
